Hardscapes Built
to Last Minnesota Winters.

Paver patios, walkways, retaining walls, and outdoor living spaces for commercial and residential properties across the Twin Cities metro. Proper base. Proper drainage. Built right.

Hardscape That Holds Up

Minnesota's freeze-thaw cycles are among the most demanding conditions for hardscape work in the country. A paver installation that performs for decades in our climate requires proper base depth, correctly sized and compacted aggregate, appropriate drainage, and experienced installation technique. At Ristau Property Maintenance, we build hardscapes the right way because shortcuts in base preparation show up within a season or two in this climate.

We install paver patios, walkways, retaining walls, and outdoor living spaces for commercial and residential clients throughout the Twin Cities suburbs. Whether you are extending your outdoor living space, improving commercial property access, or solving a drainage and grading problem with a retaining wall, we bring the experience and equipment to deliver a finished product that holds up.

Paver Patios

A well-built paver patio extends your usable outdoor space with a surface that handles foot traffic, furniture, and Minnesota's climate over the long term. We excavate to the correct depth for our frost conditions, install and compact the aggregate base in lifts, set the bedding layer, and install pavers with correct joint spacing and appropriate edge restraint. The pattern, color, and paver style are your choice. The base preparation is non-negotiable.

Walkways

Paver walkways improve both the function and appearance of a property. We install front entry walks, garden paths, and connecting walkways between structures and parking areas for both residential and commercial properties. Proper walkway installation includes appropriate width for the application, good transition to adjacent grade, and sufficient base to resist the freeze-thaw cycles that crack poured concrete walks within a few winters.

Retaining Walls

Retaining walls solve grade changes, create usable flat areas from sloped sites, and address drainage and erosion problems. We build retaining walls using segmental block systems and natural boulder installations, each sized and specified for the application. Boulder walls offer a natural, rugged aesthetic well suited to residential landscapes and larger grade changes. Both approaches require proper batter, drainage aggregate, geotextile fabric, and correct base depth. A retaining wall without proper drainage is a wall that fails. We build walls that hold.

Outdoor Living Spaces

Complete outdoor living space installations combine paver surfaces with integrated features: built-in seating walls, fire pit areas, steps, and landscape integration. We coordinate the hardscape installation with planting and landscape work to deliver a finished outdoor space, not just a patio surface. Commercial property courtyards, HOA amenity areas, and residential backyards all benefit from this integrated approach.

Hardscape Questions

What makes pavers better than poured concrete for a patio?

Pavers offer several practical advantages over poured concrete. Individual pavers flex with freeze-thaw cycles, which in Minnesota means they resist cracking significantly better than a poured slab. When damage does occur, individual units can be replaced without tearing out the entire surface. Pavers also offer a range of colors, textures, and patterns that poured concrete cannot match.

How long does a paver patio installation take?

Most residential paver patio projects take 2 to 5 days depending on size, complexity, and site conditions. Commercial projects and retaining wall work take longer. We provide a timeline estimate with your quote after assessing the site.

Do you handle base preparation, or just the paver surface?

We handle the complete installation from excavation through base preparation through finished surface. The base is the most critical component of a paver installation. A properly compacted aggregate base at the correct depth is what prevents settling, shifting, and drainage problems. We do not skip base preparation.

Can you install pavers for commercial walkways and parking areas?

Yes. Commercial paver installation is a significant part of our work. We install pavers for commercial walkways, building entries, plaza areas, and parking lot features. Commercial installations require heavier base preparation and appropriate paver specifications for vehicular loads where applicable.

Can you repair or restore an existing paver surface?

Yes. Paver restoration is often more cost-effective than full replacement. We re-level settled areas, re-sand joints, replace damaged units, and address underlying drainage issues that caused the original problems. If the base has failed, we address that rather than just resetting the surface.

Do you build retaining walls with pavers or block?

We build retaining walls using segmental retaining wall block appropriate to the application. Wall height, soil conditions, and drainage requirements determine the right system. Proper batter, drainage aggregate, and geotextile fabric are standard components of our retaining wall builds. A retaining wall without proper drainage behind it is a wall that will fail.
